" Alchemist + Oh No = Gangrene "

Just caught that new record by "Gangrene" last weekend......Four joints plus instrumentals for the whopping price of sixteen bucks....It doesn't hurt that every song on here is a banger, but I was expecting more music for that price....

* I'm digging the saw blade steez....

Looking forward to hearing the full-length (Gutter Water) when I can get my hands on it.......Anyway, these are my favorite cuts that I have heard so far.....CHECK IN...

"Freshest Rhymes"

"Overdose"

" Golden State Warriors, Part 6 "

Here are a couple "Above The Law" facts that you might not be aware of........

1..Big Hutch's uncle is acclaimed Motown artist, Willie Hutch....

2..Above The Law were the first crew that I ever heard used the term "Balling"........

3..Hutch is the inventor of the term "G-Funk", not Dr.Dre or his younger brother Warren G........I commented about this on a previous post.....

Hip Hop Dx recently sat down with Hutch to discuss his production style, new schoolers, and upcoming projects....

" DX: What was the inspiration for that record, or why that direction for that song?

Big Hutch: Well see, one thing you gotta realize is this, there’s not a direction when I make a record. If I wake up in the morning and say I wanna rap to a Rock track, I rap to it. I’m not in a box. You gotta understand this, I’m the architect of G-Funk. You can’t tell me what G-Funk is. If I want G-Funk to be blowing on a whistle and beating on a box, that’s G-Funk, because I invented it. I am the architect.

DX: I thought Warren Griffin, [Warren G], was the architect?

Big Hutch: I am the architect of that. Warren Griffin used to sleep on my floor. I am the architect of G-Funk. So when people tell me what I should do and what I should not do, I tell ‘em shut up. I go to the studio and I make records based upon how I feel… And one thing that Eazy taught me while I was at Ruthless [Records], he said, “Look at it like this, Hutch: one day you walked in here and you didn’t have one fan. What did you come in here to do it for? Because of what you felt like doing. Keep doing that and you’ll always be good with yourself.” …I’ll keep it real with you, homie. I went in and cut “Electric Lady” from my heart, not to trick nobody, not because people is on my shit, but because I heard the beat - I heard it in my head, wanted to cut it, and did it and put it out there to the world. I feel comfortable with you saying I don’t like it, Hutch, because I did what I wanna do from my heart".

" Lick Off A Shot "

Jamaican toasters I Roy, U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone, and many others laid down the foundation for modern day M.C.ing......If you listen closely to the cadence and patterns that these guys were using back then- it is obvious that they were true masters of ceremony years before Hip Hop was conceived....

Unfortunately their major contributions to the art form are still overlooked by the masses .....

In this book (Small Axe Deejays) by Ray Hurtford & Joakim Kalcidis they go into detail how influential certain dancehall artist were in regards to Hip Hop......It's a interesting read that will hold your attention and provide you with critical information.....

You can cop it HERE.....

And while your at it, you might as well scoop up this mix that accompanies the book by Jayman...........Dope shit that will give your Tuesday morning a lift.....

" The Planets-Planet Rock Gensu Dean Remix "

Check out this remix of Planet Rock that just dropped......The original beat by Roc Marciano was fly enough for me, but this one adds a little more spice to the track in my opinion....

LISTEN UP !!!!

" Know Your History, Part 2 "

* In the above pic.....(Mannie Rocker, Zulu Goblin, Big Kufi, Red Dragon, Bambaataa, B Boy Foots, Sha-Onerz, Me, Hektek, and Mad Planet)

Since Hip Hop history month is coming to a close, the crew and I decided to troop out to Yoshi's (SF) to catch up with Afrika Bambaataa.....

How can Hip Hop be dead if one of the true pioneers still gets busy all over the world on a constant basis ?

I want to thank everyone that came out for a night of hi-jinx, the perfect beats, sweat, celebration, and of course much fun.....Peace to all Zulu chapters worldwide, past and present.....

" Vitamin D Funk Explosion "

Seattle's "Vitamin D" is a triple threat when it comes to this Hip Hop shit.....He can rhyme, produce, and get busy on the wheels of steel....

On this hour long all-funk mix he provides the perfect backdrop for some backyard party antics (Who cares if Winter is in full effect)......I'm only half-way through the mix and I am already impressed by his selections, momentum, and well placed transitions....Here is what he had to say regarding this project (Funk On Sight).....

"A blend of funk classic and not so classic selections blended the way i do it! this is a REAL mixtape (no funny rapper shenanigans) for lovers of good music. done from vinyl with a touch of serato i promise that you cant front".

Seattle stand the fuck up....

" Joint Of The Day "

It's time for "Joint Of The Day" folks......And I suggest that you brace yourself for another round of true goodness..This time around I'm going to take you all the way back to 1993, with an obscure cut that will add a little spice to your life..

Pryme Tyme-"P.H.D." and that stands for POT HEAD DEGREE if you are not knowing HAHAHA....I'm not well versed on the history of the group (This might be the only thing they ever dropped), but I do know that they come from Brooklyn and this sought-after record would cost you over 100 dollars if you tried to track it down....WOW...

On the flip side is another fresh joint, "Brothers With Soul" but P.H.D. is the one that keeps me hitting rewind......

Quit stalling and take a listen if you know what's best for you.....

" 5 Tuesday Sure Shots "

Didn't I tell you motherfuckers the next post was going to be on a ugly steez ? (I'm talking about the music-definitely not Pam Grier HAHA)......

The name of this blog is HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD so you should expect to hear drama, war drums, tension, and all that other wild shit over here HAHAHA....

Here are five joints that will raise your blood pressure levels.......POW.

1..Maspyke- "54th Regiment -DRASAR MONUMENTAL REMIX"....

When I put this remix together last year- I knew I had a heavy piece of weaponry on my hands.......Turn the volume to ten and prepare to have your combat helmet blown off.....Haunting floating keys, bone crushing percussion, and rumbling bass wave splashes......

Run for cover all you suckers....

2..Mayhem Lauren- "Heavy Cream"...

Sure we all have heard Bob James flips a million times, but the way Lauren blacks out on this is just ridiculous....WOW....

3..Rubberroom- Featuring Gravity "The Pit"....

Some people cringe at listening to this type of shit, but I could blast this all day long......This is just pure chaos....I wish more Hip Hoppers these days would adopt a "We truly don't give a fuck attitude" like these Chicago madmen did.........

4..Gangreen- Featuring Raekwon "Gutter Water"...

This sounds like some blaxploitation type music with a twist........Fresh..

5..The Candy Store- Featuring Willie Littles "Get On Your Hustle"

Yes indeed this is that late night, boulevard bully rap........CHECK IN...

" Hip Hop Battlefield Goes To Soldier Field, Part 12 "

Ahhhhhhhh yeah, this is more like it......

It's almost impossible to walk around with a screw-face after listening to such beautiful music......Don't get it twisted: I'm one of the most disgruntled Hip Hoppers you will probably ever come across, but it's nice to switch it up and embrace pleasant frequencies every once in awhile.....HAHA......

Who am I kidding ?

The very next post is going to be on that ugly shit.......Until then, enjoy this blazer by the "Chicago Afrobeat Project"......Big up to all my troopers in the "Go".....

1. Talking Bush
2. Tibet On It
3. Jekajo

" Psycho Les On The Set "

You can usually count on the Beat Nuts to deliver banging production.......Even when they started to dabble in more commercial sounding records, I never fully turned my back on the duo because I knew they would have more heat on deck....

Psycho Les just dropped a new solo joint that deserves your attention (Psycho Therapy: The Remixes)........

Peep this...

" Ghetto Music"........

"Funky Grandma Sandwiches"

" Masai Bey Speaks "

The good folks over at Fifth Element (Kevin Beacham) sat down with Masai Bey and chopped it up extra heavy........Masai goes into detail about teaching Cage how to rhyme, linking up with Pete Nice, his fathers musical influence, the forming of the Weathermen, etc.......

They also unveil a gang of cuts from Masai's massive catalogue, including early 90's demos.....BLAM...

PEEP.....

" On The 45 Tip "

Yesterday I stumbled onto a podcast site by these cats from London (Skeg, The Sleeve, and J-Squared).....Prince Whipper Whip interviews, all types of beats, and this all 45 session definitely caught my attention....

Give your Monday morning an extra power boost and scoop this one up....

Tracklist-

" Hip Hop Morale "

Since the Zulu Nation anniversary recently popped off, it's only right that I bless you with some official Zulu business......Take a listen to this crazy mix by the P Brothers (The Zulu Beat)....

" Hip Hop Battlefield Remix Series "

At this point in time I have probably posted up over 50 of my own remixes.......I appreciate all the feedback and opinions from all of you over the years....

When it comes to beats I'm always learning....Even though I have been concocting my own productions for quite sometime, I try to keep an open mind and strive to remain a student of music in general.....

To be honest, the records that I listen to dictate how I shape my sounds when I'm tapping out beats......After listening to a funky song, within minutes I already know what to do with it without even turning on my sampler....

On this remix of Nas's "The Set Up", I tried to capture exactly how I was feeling at the time......GULLY....

So if your looking for crushing drums, B-Boy chaos, head splitting chops, and all that other rugged shit- HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD has you covered......

If your rocking wack computer speakers- I highly suggest you transfer this over to the booming system so you can truly hear what's popping off correctly ......

Check in.........

" New Shit On Deck "

2010 has been a prosperous year for former U.N. gang repper, Roc Marciano....Once again he nails a solid performance on the production tip as well as microphone duties...

Take a listen to this raw heater "Scarface" and get ready for more drama....

" King Medallions Vs. Arch Angel "

In my opinion this album right here (King Medallions Vs. Arch Angel) is the best album that Planet Asia has ever put out....Mainly because the beats by Architect (Homeliss Derelix) are just ridiculous....

It dropped in Japan in 2006, but I don't think that it was ever released commercially in the United States....From beginning to end, these two blast off heavy doses of west coast hardcore without losing momentum......

Here are a couple cuts that will put you in the right frame of mind.....BLAM,BLAM....

"Supernova"

"Black Music"

" For Those That Like To Groove, Part 11 "

Wow, this record is just out of control.......

I could play this type of shit on repeat all day without a problem....You might have even heard some of your favorite producers chop up certain sounds from this joint....

So quit stalling holmes and scoop these up....

"24 Carat Black Theme"

"Ghetto, Misfortune's Wealth"

" What's Wrong With This Picture ? "

When I first started this blog three years ago, I was determined to blow the whistle on all the wack bullshit that was sorrounding me....I even had a column called "Sucka Of The Week" and I would pop blog shots at well deserving targets.....

But a wise man once told me "It's easy to criticize people all day, but it would be more productive to spend your energy highlighting the things that motivate you and inspire you"........So I decided to dead all the soapbox ranting and focus more on all the fly shit that I deal with on a constant basis......

Every once in awhile though, I will spot some shit that I have to speak on......POINT BLANK......Sometimes I feel like I am in the black "Twilight Zone"........When I scoped out this album cover by Sheek Louch, my first reaction was to clown his ass, but that would be too easy......Now I just feel sorry for this dude.......Back in the days this type of shit wouldn't even fly, now it's straight up Hip Hop anarchy....

No rules, no codes, no B-Boy honor or respect........Is anyone else going to step to the plate and call this jive shit out ?....

I seriously doubt it.....Some dudes might even call this album cover some real soldier gorilla/guerilla shit, and get hype by it......

SUCKERS..

" Prince Poetry 2010 Shots "

Yesterday at work one of my cornball co-workers popped in Organized Confusion's first album.....I was surprised because at work I usually hear Usher, Black Eyed Peas, and all that other bullshit....

He asked me if I ever heard this album before?..

HAHAHAHA.....What, are you fucking crazy ?......So I took a little time out of my busy day to school his ass on some Organized Confusion information......I told him how they were once signed to Hollywood Basic which was handled by Disney Music Group, etc...

After that, all he could talk about was how fresh Pharoahe Monch was, so I decided to hit him off with the new Prince Poetry collabo record he did with D-Strong...............

Here are a couple highlights from the "Get Off The Playground E.P."

Enjoy....

Who needs coffee when HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD is on the set?....This Monday morning scorcher will put a little pep in your step cousin.......

Phillip Lehman & Gabe Roth started the funk label Desco Records in the late 90's......After the label folded, Roth started "Daptone Records" and the rest is history......Lehmen created "Soul Fire" which hasn't received the same accolades as Daptone, but truth be told, "Soul Fire" keeps it extra filthy and deserve more praise for their releases......

Here is a compilation of Soul Fire artist that will put you under a heavy spell........

" Joint Of The Day "

Ahhhhhh yeah.......

If you haven't noticed by now, Hip Hop Battlefield gravitates towards the grimy side of things.....When I hear these sensitive cornballs with their soft rhymes and fluffy beats, I just have to shake my head in disbelief........

So for this episode of "Joint Of The Day", your going to get hit with a heavy handed uppercut straight to the face.....This cut by Lo Down (Fright Night) sounds like some haunted house, apocalyptic type shit.....If you missed this in 1994 don't feel bad, I wasn't up on this cut until last year myself.....

I'm not well versed on the history of "Lo Down", all I know is that they get very busy over a menacing beat by Last Straw Productions......If you have more info on this mysterious crew- drop some science in the comment section...

When it comes to west coast hardcore, "Above The Law" deserve an honorable mention.....K.M.G, Total Chaos, Big Hutch, and Go Mack put the city of Pomona on the map with well though out conceptual albums.....

My favorite album from the crew is the influential "Black Mafia Life" joint that dropped in 1992......I can listen to this record front to back without hitting the skip button.....Two D.J.'s and two M.C.'s combined forces for a project that changed the landscape of west coast Hip Hop forever....

Not only did Dr.Dre use this album for inspiration on "The Chronic", so many other producers tried their hardest to emulate the sound of "BML" without coming close....

So here's a salute to you "Above The Law" for helping make 1992 a year to remember......

"Pimp Clinic".........Damn this is funky, so funky that Dr. Dre straight bit it....
