" New Years Wreckage "

Another year came and went in a blink of an eye...

CRAZY.....

I guess we will be hearing another "Skillz" end of the year wrap up sometime soon...HA..

Anyway, earlier today I decided to get a little turntable abuse in to help bring the new year in properly....I'm not going to give you guys a playlist this time around, but you will hear cuts from Large Pro, Walking Large, A Kid Called Roots, Ghostface Killah, Guilty Simpson, Jon Knotty, Akinyele, accapella flips, doubles, and all types of other wild shit...

Big shout out to everyone that supports how I get down over here.....2012 shots and you don't stop !!!!!

" 2 Tone : Mike - T Is Dope "

After listening to that Kid Jazz interview with Thief The Priest a couple days ago, I decided to do a little investigating to see what Thief's history is all about....

Come to find out he was in a group called 2-Tone back in the 80's and Mike T from CMW was their D.J. for a period of time..

WOW...

Back in 1988 they recorded some material that ended up being shelved...Thankfully the good folks over at Jamille Records released a couple joints from the crew earlier this year.....

My top pick from the batch is a cut named "Mike T Is Dope" produced by KG of The Cold Crush Brothers.....FRESH IS THE WORD..

" Roddy Rod 2011 "

Fuck what ya heard that dude formerly of Maspyke, "Roddy Rod" has some very fresh beats under his belt...

Unfortunately he doesn't get the props that his fellow Low Budget Crew members receive (Kev Brown, Odyssey)......Hopefully with the release of Oakwood Grain 2 all that will change....

Take a listen and get your mentals correct...

" Mid Week Rockets "

Who has a grimier voice than Big Twin in Hip Hop ?

Think about that one for a second....Nine, D.O.C., Duke from Psycho Realm ?

The only person that I can think of off top would be Burro Banton who leans more on the dancehall side of things......Twinz links up with Bam & Big Noyd for some 2011 ugliness on this joint entitled, "Burn It Down" from DJ Skizz's upcoming release BQE...

Skizz has been dropping some raw beats lately so be on the lookout for that project early next year homeboy...

PEEP..

Burn It Down (produced by DJ Skizz) by DJ SKIZZ

" New Psycho Les "

Psycho Les pops back up on the set with this new joint "Sadat & Sandman"......

Lately I have heard all types of commotion about how ill Sandman is, especially after signing with Stones Throw, but to be honest I have never heard any of his music...I'm still on the fence regarding his rhymes on this song..

Can't front though- the great dot x steals the motherfuckin show...

" Battlefield Remix Steez "

Before I even get started I want ya'll to know something - these remixes that I flip are tailor made joints....

Instead of just throwing an accapella over a previously made production, I build the instrumental around the vocals which enables me to get intricate with the wreckage....HA.

Some of these producers out here drop vitamin deficiency beats....I try to bulk my shit up with protein powders, amino acids, and all the proper essentials..

My goal is to construct beats that will topple motherfuckers.......With this remix of "I'm Legend" by Smiley The Ghetto Child, I believe I accomplished my mission......BLAM,BLAM....

" Kid Jazz Vs. Donald D "

Even though the Rhyme Syndicate only put out one full length album (Rhyme Syndicate Coming Through) they made a tremendous impact...One of my personal favorites from the crew "Kid Jazz" is still putting out music under the new moniker, J-Swagg...

When I first found out that he put "swag" in his name I almost lost my composure.....I started having flashbacks of when other childhood heroes of mine let me down in the new millennium with sub-par material full of uninspired rhymes, new age cornball beats, and all that other shit (you know the scenario)...

But when I heard the song "Eat E'm Up Swagg" that rocks a chorus similar to L.L. Cool J's "Eat E'm Up L", I had to shake my head in disbelief.......Not only does he swipe L.L's hook, he takes a few swipes at the Syndicate sniper Donald-D.....

Regardless, what your about to hear is a piece of Hip Hop history.......Earlier this year "Kid Jazz" rocked a interview with a cat named Thief The High Priest......Do yourself a favor and skip the first couple of minutes (you will see what I'm talking about)....

You would be hard-pressed to find anything about Kid Jazz or his old group Domination on the net, so consider yourself lucky trooper....

" Attack Of The Killer Demos Returns "

Only a few MC's could touch James Todd Smith in his prime....

SERIOUSLY...

He wasn't the most technical M.C., but he made up for it with pure B-Boy explosiveness...For instance on this demo version of "Jack The Ripper" he goes all out with a barrage of battle rhymes, attitude, and 1988 hardrock frequencies ...

" Hip Hop Holiday Status "

Last weekend I had the opportunity to rock a production with my brothers Peezo (Funk What Ya Heard), Demik, and Big Kufu Onerz...

We decided that with all this holiday hysteria popping off, why not celebrate something actually worthy of praise : HIP HOP...

Every single day is a motherfuckin Hip Hop holiday over here on this side of things...365 days a year we are constantly looking for that perfect beat, striving to perfect our skills, and strategizing on ways to keep our Hip Hop morale up regardless of how many of our peers have " fallen the fuck off "...

So take a look at these flicks and peep some 2012 high powered frequencies duke...Salute to all my troopers out there that know what time it is !!!!!

1...PEZO- God damn, this is just crazy......Symetrical, electric, and straight up B-Boy.....

2...DEMIK- Check out the movement in this piece famo...This is some old tidal wave shit......SPLASH.

3...DRASAR MONUMENTAL (ERAN)- I had fun splashing this one up....Take a look at the color scheme, fills, and all the extras.....Big up to Kufu for helping me keep it right and exact..

4...KUFUE ONE- This piece is screaming flavors.......Kufu has so many styles under his belt that he can rock effortlessly with originality and finesse....Not to mention that he can flip characters and letters like a champ..

BLAM,BLAM..

And as the year comes to a close please remember to stay focused, inspired, and determined to get your goals accomplished.....Mr. Hip Hop Battlefield will do the same.....

2...M.O.P. "Body On The Iron".

Out of all the cuts on that new "Sparta" album, this one gets the most burn over here...

3..Planet Asia & Planet Asia. "Madrid".

Just got done listening to that "Cracks In the Vinyl" E.P........To be honest the project sounds a little rushed as if it was just thrown together, regardless "Madrid" bangs something decent...

" Sample Source Shit "

Fake Blood's latest journey of sample source material (Used #6) definitely has it's moments.....

Out of all the mixes in this series, this one right here is probably my favorite.....Almost a solid hour of dusty originals, no reissues, no comps, no nonsense.

Don't take my word for it homeboy- scoop it up yourself and prepare for heavy turbulence..

" Sound Boy Killing "

In my mind dancehall / reggae music and Hip Hop are one in the same....

Both art forms flip wordplay over different types of rhythms...Sound system culture is a big part of their development..Also another important factor that is often overlooked when analyzing the correlation between Hip Hop and dancehall /reggae :

COMPETITION........Competition fuels innovation, which leads to massive amounts of creative explosions throughout the years...

It's no surprise that one of Hip Hop's pioneers (Kool Herc) hails from Jamaica...

One of my favorite toasters Mr. Bounty Killer gets the mixtape treatment by a cat named Selector Rondon....When it comes to badman, guntalk lyrics "BK" is one of the illest to ever do it....PERIOD....

This mix starts off real strong, but loses momentum for a couple tunes (You will notice what I'm talking about).....Don't trip though fam, things pick up again rather quickly......So turn the motherfuckin volume up, lick off a couple shots and catch a rudeboy zone...

" Columbo Black - Prelude To Scrap Metal 2 "

After listening to Columbo Black's newest offering late last night I was quite surprised.....Dudes flow and wordplay are impressive, and it's obvious to my ears that this brother spends a healthy amount of time cracking open the books...

Another thing that caught my attention was his subject matter...Instead of falling victim to average cliche's - "CB" flipped creative concepts in a way that I haven't heard in a minute....FRESH..

I almost passed on this project due to the non-descriptive cover work (Can't judge a book by it's cover I guess)....Take a listen trooper..

" K-Def Drops Jewels "

Ego Trip caught up with the New Jersey beatsmith K-Def for a in-depth analysis of his top 10 sample flips.......

FRESH IS THE WORD...

2. Public Enemy – “Public Enemy No. 1″ (Def Jam, 1987)
Producer: The Bomb Squad

Sample Source: Fred Wesley & the JB’s – “Blow Your Head” (People, 1974)

K-Def: I knew James Brown stuff pretty good. The original record of “Blow Your Head” was fast as hell and it had bongos and all this other shit in it. And when I first heard “Public Enemy No. 1″ I heard the 12-inch instrumental without Chuck D rhyming on it, and I thought, that shit didn’t sound like [what I remembered "Blow Your Head" sounded like]. It sounded like they chopped up [Melvin Bliss' breakbeat classic] “Substitution,” and did their own pattern. It was a phenomenal [production to do] with that technology back then. To his day I don’t believe there’s too many people who could [re-create] that record. It was just incredible [what they did with the sample]. The swing of the drums and the way the [synth] noise just stayed there. I know looping was just starting then. At the time, sampling was a lot of 4-track taping and re-dubbing and making stuff extend. But to hear something where you couldn’t [tell] where the sample was placed it was [so seamless], I just thought that was incredibly hooked up. It was simple, but very effective.

" Joe Fatal Speaks "

Here are three things I discovered about Joe Fatal while listening to the newest episode of the "Classic Storm Show" with DJ Toshi....

1..I always knew that Large Pro was instrumental in assisting Nas in getting hooked up with a record deal, but what I didn't know is that Joe brought Nas to "LP's" attention which led to him getting picked up by MC Serch (Serchlight Music)...

2..Akinyele & Nas helped Joe write his rhymes on the classic, "Live At The BBQ"....

3..DJ Muggs signed Joe in the early 90's on the strength of a demo he put together with Beat Minerz on production....This was before they went on to create beats for Black Moon, Smith & Wesson, etc....

I wonder if that demo is floating around somewhere in cyber-space ?

This is a great piece of Hip Hop history that you do not want to miss ya'll..

Toshi also rocks a set that includes new songs from M.O.P., Roc Marciano, Bumpy Knuckles, Dom Pachino, Raekwon, and many more...

The GZA was a special guest on Harvard campus December 1st for a autobiographical lecture of sorts (Black Mens Forum).....

He goes into full detail regarding his early years of formulating rhymes, his current writing process, the evolution of the Wu-Tang, respect for the artform, etc.....

One of the things that I appreciate about this lecture is that you can tell the GZA is just being himself....He doesn't talk to his audience as if he is on a college campus- he keeps it simple and straight to the point without all the extras.....
