How did you initially become part of the D.I.T.C. family?

“I knew Show through a family member from when I was about twelve-years-old and I always used to run up on him telling him that I could rhyme. Even back then, Show would be like ‘Wow! The s**t you’re saying is crazy for someone your age. You sound like Nas or someone.’ Hearing someone who was already in the game and working with some great emcees say stuff like that really kept me going. So I continued rhyming which then lead to me meeting Big Pun during a cypher up in D&D which is how I then got to do the “Where Ya At?” joint with Pun for the D.I.T.C. album. At that time I was having a lot of fun and really living in a dream world. I mean, Pun was still coming off the success of “I’m Not A Player” and his debut album so for him to say he wanted to do a song with me at that time was crazy. I was like, ‘You’d love to do a song with me?! I’d love to do a song with you!’ That feels like it was a long time ago now, so for me to still be relevant to people today and for them to love the feel of the music I make is something that’s heartfelt and it’s why I keep going whether making music is a lucrative situation or not. It comes from my heart and I think the people out there can feel that in everything I do. It’s just all about me staying in my zone, so it goes back to what I said on that joint I did with The P Brothers for their “Gas” album (laughs).”

It's been almost two years since Killa Sha passed away due to complications from diabetes (Jan 18th 2010)....It's a motherfuckin shame because he was in a class by himself when it came to rocking convincing street parables with finesse and skill...

There were talks of a Large Pro produced album called the "Shepard", but I haven't heard anything about that project as of late...Hopefully that album sees the light of day eventually.....

Back in 2010 J-Love dropped the "Acknowledge The Vet" mixtape that features Killa Sha in top form....Do the right thing and scoop this up if you know what's best for you...

Come to find out he was in a group called 2-Tone back in the 80's and Mike T from CMW was their D.J. for a period of time..

WOW...

Back in 1988 they recorded some material that ended up being shelved...Thankfully the good folks over at Jamille Records released a couple joints from the crew earlier this year.....

Even though the Rhyme Syndicate only put out one full length album (Rhyme Syndicate Coming Through) they made a tremendous impact...One of my personal favorites from the crew "Kid Jazz" is still putting out music under the new moniker, J-Swagg...

When I first found out that he put "swag" in his name I almost lost my composure.....I started having flashbacks of when other childhood heroes of mine let me down in the new millennium with sub-par material full of uninspired rhymes, new age cornball beats, and all that other shit (you know the scenario)...

But when I heard the song "Eat E'm Up Swagg" that rocks a chorus similar to L.L. Cool J's "Eat E'm Up L", I had to shake my head in disbelief.......Not only does he swipe L.L's hook, he takes a few swipes at the Syndicate sniper Donald-D.....

Regardless, what your about to hear is a piece of Hip Hop history.......Earlier this year "Kid Jazz" rocked a interview with a cat named Thief The High Priest......Do yourself a favor and skip the first couple of minutes (you will see what I'm talking about)....

K-Def: I knew James Brown stuff pretty good. The original record of “Blow Your Head” was fast as hell and it had bongos and all this other shit in it. And when I first heard “Public Enemy No. 1″ I heard the 12-inch instrumental without Chuck D rhyming on it, and I thought, that shit didn’t sound like [what I remembered "Blow Your Head" sounded like]. It sounded like they chopped up [Melvin Bliss' breakbeat classic] “Substitution,” and did their own pattern. It was a phenomenal [production to do] with that technology back then. To his day I don’t believe there’s too many people who could [re-create] that record. It was just incredible [what they did with the sample]. The swing of the drums and the way the [synth] noise just stayed there. I know looping was just starting then. At the time, sampling was a lot of 4-track taping and re-dubbing and making stuff extend. But to hear something where you couldn’t [tell] where the sample was placed it was [so seamless], I just thought that was incredibly hooked up. It was simple, but very effective.

Here are three things I discovered about Joe Fatal while listening to the newest episode of the "Classic Storm Show" with DJ Toshi....

1..I always knew that Large Pro was instrumental in assisting Nas in getting hooked up with a record deal, but what I didn't know is that Joe brought Nas to "LP's" attention which led to him getting picked up by MC Serch (Serchlight Music)...

2..Akinyele & Nas helped Joe write his rhymes on the classic, "Live At The BBQ"....

3..DJ Muggs signed Joe in the early 90's on the strength of a demo he put together with Beat Minerz on production....This was before they went on to create beats for Black Moon, Smith & Wesson, etc....

I wonder if that demo is floating around somewhere in cyber-space ?

This is a great piece of Hip Hop history that you do not want to miss ya'll..

Toshi also rocks a set that includes new songs from M.O.P., Roc Marciano, Bumpy Knuckles, Dom Pachino, Raekwon, and many more...

The GZA was a special guest on Harvard campus December 1st for a autobiographical lecture of sorts (Black Mens Forum).....

He goes into full detail regarding his early years of formulating rhymes, his current writing process, the evolution of the Wu-Tang, respect for the artform, etc.....

One of the things that I appreciate about this lecture is that you can tell the GZA is just being himself....He doesn't talk to his audience as if he is on a college campus- he keeps it simple and straight to the point without all the extras.....

The 2011 DMC Champion DJ Vajra comes correct on this "B-Boys Best Friend" mix....

Those cats over at the 5th Element blog recently put up an editorial about the frustrations of a modern day Disc Jockey (The Evolution & Devolution Of The DJ).....It's an excellent read that pretty much sums up how I have been feeling for awhile now.

"You would think with the explosion of so much music being created and easily available that would result in DJs being able to open up their playlist, but quite to the contrary. These days DJs seem to be narrowing their playlists more than ever. Even worst yet, DJs seem to be losing their individuality. As recent as a few years ago I could go to a variety of different clubs and bars to hear DJs and never hear the same tracks or styles of tracks over and over, even though the places I frequented had DJs working from the same musical pools; 80s/90s Hip Hop & Soul/Funk. There was still enough music for everyone to build a unique playlist".

Does anyone out there care about beat biting anymore ?

It seems as if producers are getting extra lazy these days by flipping joints that other cats rocked years ago...For instance, "Water Boarding" was deleted from the final version of Mobb Deep's newest release, Black Cocaine (I think I know why-HAHA)....

Sure the beat is fresh, but Encore killed the same beat over a decade ago on a song entitled "Water World" with Bay area producer Dan The Automator...

This isn't the first time another producer beat Alchemist to the punch.....

From the stories that I have read, Alchemist was brought into the "Infamous" fold on the strength of a beat he submitted for the Murda Music (1999) album called "The Realest", featuring Kool G.Rap.....I'm quite sure you love that beat just like everybody else - but there is only one problem famz...

The Bronx Bombers The Legion already rocked that same exact loop on "Rest In Peace", from their debut release Theme+Echo=Krill (1994)...

Awwww, I know what your thinking..."Drasar is a hater, how could he diss Alchemist"....Nah brother I'm not dissing anybody (ALC is a dope producer that has definitely proven himself over the years)-I'm just dead serious about this Hip Hop shit and you can't argue with the motherfucking truth trooper...

"I made this record in early 2005. At the time, I realized that Hip Hop was less about wordplay, and more about talking to a beat, while at the same time, the backbone of hip hop, lost it's backbone to the laptop. Skill development is no where to be found.

Hip hop, like politics, only has a handful of flavors, and a group of subscribers of each. Gangster, South, Westcoast, Hipster, Underground, and a few more. This is what's left, if you don't fall into this, you are NOT "hip hop". The artform I fell in love with, changed, very much, and it's an empty shell.
